Stop Utilities Service & Insurance

This is one of those tasks that no one thinks about doing ahead of time, but is crucial, as you don’t want to forget and end up paying the buyer’s electricity bill for the first month. So contact your utility companies now to let them know that you’re moving and to take all utilities out of your name as of the day of closing (unless you are renting back the property for an amount of time post-closing).   Generally in Colorado you’ll contact Xcel Energy for the electricity and gas.  You’ll also contact your TV/internet and trash providers as well. In Colorado, the title company will ensure the water bill is taken out of your name and transferred to the owner at closing. If you have a security system, schedule it to be shut off the day before closing.

Ensure that you inform your homeowner's insurance company about your relocation in Colorado and make arrangements to either cancel the service or transfer it to your new residence. The transfer should be scheduled for the day of the closing.

If you’re moving to a new home, transfer the utilities to your new home instead of canceling them.
